Dreamwork

Surrender always feels perfect. An embodiment of “finally.” Perhaps it’s utterly human to hold on to what we know deep down is dead. Or maybe there are people in the world who don’t. Anyway, I’m not one of them. So when I let go and the pine tree began to explode out of my mouth, as my chest ripped open and filled with the microbial truth, as my emptiness came clear and the transience of my life that felt so solid branched in evergreen exclamation toward the darkening sky, I smiled. Love is here. Love is always here.

Love story

Our first kiss was seven years into our relationship on a road trip to go to an eco-psychology conference with ecological luminaries Joanna Macy and Bill Plotkin. We continued to feed something magical and profound between us that we didn’t even know we were feeding.

Getting Stuck, and Unstuck, in an Age of Collapse

I remembered for the thousandth time just how magical this world is, how intelligent, how mysterious. I was reminded of my humble place as a single blink in the eye of eternity and was graciously welcomed into a conversation of such depth and profundity that I still don’t know how to feel fully worthy of it. It sounds crazy, but this kind of experience is utterly natural. It’s what we all still remember somewhere in our bones.

Meeting Meaning in the Dark

When Madison asked me if I’d be interested in offering a course with her, I was fired up on five days of Soulcraft work in the woods and feeling clear and strong. My soul really likes to make spontaneous decisions when I’ve been loyal in tending it. So, I didn’t think too hard and simply said yes. Now, two months later, after the strain of moving while having Covid, as we’re perched on the edge of what’s feeling like a wild, melty, confusing winter, I find myself living in a question mark. Part of me wants to call her and ask “wtf are we doing?” And then I smile and realize that’s what this whole course is about. Collectively, we are being asked to embody radical unknowing as we come to terms with ever-darkening days.

Dream

I was in a dream last week. I am at a house in the desert with some friends and we are getting ready to go on an evening bicycle ride. In preparation for the bike ride my friends decide to not go, so I go for a sunset walk. On my walk I pass saguaro cactus, palo verde trees, creosote, and other desert plants. I hear a sound behind me and see a trailer bumping down the road. Nothing was pulling the trailer yet it was moving along as if it was being pulled by some invisible force. In the back of the trailer are 3 dead buck deer with their antlers broken, mangled, and smashed, hanging on just by the tips. I am struck by the horror that someone would destroy and damage someone so beautiful. I reach into the trailer and hoist out the first buck I touch. I say to the buck “I will fix you. I will repair you.” I will worship you and bring you back to your glory. I then awake out of the dream.

Transitions

As fall flutters down upon us we say goodbye to the long warm days of summer. We harvest our gardens, mend the soil for next year, and save our seeds for the next sowing of life. We prepare for winter and the trouble riding on the backs of the brisk wind. Another season turns, our bodies and souls fill themselves with the beauty of the only constant in life, change. What is changing within you and your life? Take a moment and gaze out your window. What arises, what images appear when you contemplate the dying back, the fear perpetuated on the screens, and the world changing before your eyes? What sensations do you feel? What do your senses tell you? What happens when you take a moment to slow down?
